In-Home Dog Boarding & Doggy Daycare FAQS

Is Leander Pet Care a dog boarding facility?

Nope, not really!  Boarding with us is like sending your dog on vacation!  Dogs that board with us are not put into dog runs or crates, but spend the day interacting with us and the night in peaceful slumber.  Dogs stay in our home and are treated like members of our family.  Our goal is for your dog to feel comfortable and for his stay with us to feel like a home away from home.  Your dog(s) will spend the day how they choose.  A dog with extra energy will have fun going on two walks per day, and will also have plenty of supervised play in our large fenced-in backyard.  Dogs who prefer a more laid-back approach may enjoy finding a comfy spot of their choosing for some peace and quiet, be it on a couch or pet bed.  No matter the exuberance of your dog, all dogs get plenty of love, belly rubs, and interaction when they stay with us!

What is included when my dog stays with you?

Everything that your dog needs is included in our boarding rate, with the exception of food.  We take extra precautions during your dog’s stay to prevent him or her from getting an upset tummy from a new food.  Your dog(s) will enjoy:

  • two walks per day, unless you advise us otherwise.
  • being fed on their usual schedule.
  • any treats that you would like to send with your dog, or we can offer some of our own treats (with your approval).
  • supervised play in our large, fenced-in backyard with a shady porch.
  • full run of our home, including being welcome on our beds, couches and pet beds.
  • plenty of interaction, love and belly rubs!
What do I need to bring with my dog for boarding?
  • Pet Bed and Bedding (optional).
  • Crate (optional) – if your dog usually stays in a crate at night or while you are away, please bring your crate for boarding.  We like to follow the same rules at our house that you do at yours!
  • Toys (Optional, please limit to 3).
  • Collar/Harness with tags.
  • Food – for stays less than two weeks, please package food into baggies as individual meals.  For longer stays, bringing the food in bulk is okay.
  • Treats (optional).
  • Medication, if needed.
What happens if my dog runs out of food?

We will gladly pick up more food for your dog at a local pet store. After we have picked up a bag of your dog's food, we will invoice you for the cost of the food plus a $15 errand fee.

Is there a charge for Sunday drop-off and/or pick-up?

Unlike most traditional boarding kennels and vet's office, we do not charge a fee for pick-up or drop-off on a Sunday.

What time can I pick my dog up from his/her stay with you?

We strive to be flexible and accommodating about drop-off and pick-up times. We offer appointments for pickup between the hours of 8 am – 8 pm.  It is important to communicate with us about the time you will arrive to pick up your dog. A quick text to give us your ETA is helpful and appreciated.

Do you offer additional services, such as grooming or training?

We are not professional groomers, however we do offer add-on services for your dog’s stay with us.  The added pampering services that we offer are:

  • Dog Baths
  • FURminator De-Shedding Treatment

We do not have a professional dog trainer on staff.  If you are trying to train your dog to learn a certain word or command, just let us know and we can work on it with him or her during the stay. We will also work on loose-leash walking during our daily walks.

Do you administer medication?

We can administer topical or oral medication.  Please let us know how you approach administering medication to your pet!

What requirements are there to board my dog with Leander Pet Care?

We require a free consultation prior to scheduling your dog’s stay with us.  At this consultation, we will check your dog’s temperament to confirm that he or she is suitable for an in-home boarding environment.  We judge your dog’s reaction to new people and other dogs, and watch for signs of aggression.

Please ensure that your dog is current on all vaccinations before their first stay, and that he or she has current tags that have his name and a contact phone number.

In addition, the requirements for boarding your dog are:

  • Get along with other dogs and children.
  • Housetrained to go outside, with the exception of puppies and special needs dogs.
  • Does not mark indoors.
  • Does not have an aggressive temperament.
  • Does not bark excessively.
  • Up to date vaccinations.
  • Overall health is good.
  • Free of fleas, ticks, parasites and infectious diseases.
How far in advance should I make a boarding reservation for my dog?

It is important to schedule your reservation as soon as you know the dates you will need care, as we do sometimes book up far in advance.  It is especially imperative to reserve early for the holiday season and holiday weekends!

I usually board my dog at the vet's office or in a kennel. Why should I choose in-home dog boarding?

In-home boarding is a very different experience for your dog!  We hope your dog feels like he or she is in a home away from home when they stay with us.  For more information about the differences between a boarding facility and in-home boarding, read this helpful article.

My dog has been aggressive to other dogs and/or children in the past. Can I still boarding him/her with Leander Pet Care?

For the safety of everyone involved, we cannot accept dogs in our home that have ever shown aggression towards other dogs and/or children. There are no exceptions to this policy. We very strongly encourage you to schedule a free consultation with us before we agree to care, in order to judge your dog’s reaction to other dogs and children. If you decide to forego the free consultation, and bring your dog to our home for a stay and we see signs of aggression towards other dogs or children, we reserve the right to refuse service.

We will gladly offer to pet sit in your home if your dog is not compatible with an in-home dog boarding environment.

Pet Sitting FAQs

Why should I choose a professional pet sitter?
  • Your pet stays in the environment they are most comfortable with.
  • No need to travel with your pet, and they will be waiting for you at home upon your return.
  • Home security while you are away.  We make your home appear lived-in and will be able to recognize an emergency happening at your home, for example a water leak or a broken appliance.
  • Great option for pets who are not always friendly to new animals.
  • No exposure to diseased animals like you may find in a boarding kennel.
  • We send photo/video/text updates each time we visit your animal, as long as you have not requested otherwise.

For more information about why you should choose a professional pet sitter, please read this helpful article.

Is there an added charge for multiple pets?

The rate shown per pet sitting visit is for all pets in your home.  If your pets have been known to cause excessive messes, there are many pets to care for in your home, or you request additional services that may take additional time, we may require or recommend longer visits at an additional charge.

Will I need to give you a key to my home?

We require two keys to your home, and prefer to keep the keys on file. Keys kept on file are coded and tagged so as not to reveal the address of the home that they unlock.  When keys are not in use, they are placed in a non-descript lockbox in a secure location at our home.  If you choose for us not to keep your key on file when not in use, we charge a $15 fee to for each time you need us to pick up or return your key, which helps to pay for our gas and time.

What if my pet runs out of food, kitty litter or other supplies?

We will gladly make a trip to the pet store to pick up supplies for your pet. After we have picked up your pet's supplies, we will invoice you for the cost of the supplies, with an additional $15 errand fee.

Can I schedule a specific time for my pet sitter to be at my home?

We offer 5 time blocks for pet sitting visits.  They are:

  • Morning – 8-10am,
  • Late Morning – 10am-12pm,
  • Afternoon – 1-3pm,
  • Late Afternoon – 4-6pm,
  • and Evening – 6-8pm.

This means that we will arrive to your home for the visit within the 2 hour window of time that you have chosen. Due to circumstances beyond our control, such as: weather, traffic, and other clients' pets, we do not guarantee specific times that we will arrive at your home. We do guarantee that we will arrive in the time block(s) that you have chosen.

Will the pet sitter pick up after my pets?

Your sitter will pick after your pet(s) when they are out on their walk. They will also pick up after your pet(s) if they go in your yard while under their care; however, we do not provide yard clean up services. If your pet(s) gets sick or has an accident in your home, we will clean up after them to the best of our abilities with the cleaning products you provide.

How many times per day do most people book pet sitting when they go on vacation?

A standard pet sit for dogs is usually 3 times per day – Once in the Morning (8-10am), once in the Afternoon (1-3pm) or Late Afternoon (4-6pm) and Once in the Evening before bed (6-8pm) however we do offer 5 time blocks (Morning, Late Morning, Afternoon, Late Afternoon, Evening) for which client’s can book. Some dogs are fine with only two visits per day.

Cats require daily visits, once per day, but you can schedule more if you’d like. We do not offer every-other-day pet sits.  Since every pet is unique, you can simply customize each visit to meet your individual pet’s needs.
